Lang Co Bay: The Quiet Stretch of Coast Between Da Nang and Hue
Lăng Cô – Where Nature Paints a Masterpiece by the Central Coast
There are places in the world where, upon your first arrival, the only sound you can utter is a gasp of awe. Lăng Cô Bay – Hue is one of them. I’ve crossed the Hải Vân Pass countless times, but each time that emerald bay appears at the foot of the pass, my heart still tightens with its beauty. It’s not a showy beauty, not a beauty polished by five-star resorts or hotels – this is a wild, pure beauty so profound you’ll ask yourself, “Wow, why didn’t I come here sooner?”
In 2009, the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club officially welcomed Lăng Cô Bay into its prestigious list – standing alongside names like Hạ Long Bay, Guanabara Bay (Brazil), or Phunket Bay (Thailand). This was no accident. It was a well-deserved recognition for a raw gem that we, the people of Central Vietnam, have cherished for hundreds of years.
In this article, I won’t just tell you how beautiful Lăng Cô is – I’ll guide you through every corner, every nook, from the best breakfast spots to the most picturesque photo locations, from the ideal time to visit the beach to how to avoid being ripped off when taking a boat trip. This is a practical review of Lăng Cô Bay, from the perspective of someone who has lived and loved this land all their life.
What is Lăng Cô Bay? Why is it So Special?
Geography and Location – Where Mountains, Sea, and Lagoon Converge
Lăng Cô is a small town in Phú Lộc District, Thừa Thiên – Hue Province, located just north of the Hải Vân Pass. About 70km from Hue city and 35km from Da Nang, Lăng Cô sits on a narrow, crescent-shaped strip of land, with the vast East Sea on one side and the expansive Lăng Cô Lagoon with its peaceful fishing village on the other. Behind it rises the majestic Bạch Mã mountain range, covered in lush, year-round primary forest.
This is precisely what makes Lăng Cô rare on the world’s geographical map: from a single point, you can simultaneously see the sea, the lagoon, the mountains, and the forest. Few places on earth possess such a perfect combination. Lăng Cô Beach stretches over 10km, with fine, powdery white sand and water so clear you can see small pebbles on the seabed at a depth of 2-3 meters.
History and Name – A Little-Known Story
Many people wonder where the name “Lăng Cô” comes from. There are several theories, but the story most often told by locals is: in the past, this area was home to many storks (cò), and the French transliterated the local term “làng cò” (stork village) into “Lăng Cô,” and the name has stuck ever since. Some other documents suggest the name originates from Chinese characters, related to the unique topography of the region.
During the French colonial period, Lăng Cô was an important stop on the North-South railway line, and Lăng Cô station is still operational today, boasting one of the most scenic train stations in Vietnam. The railway line runs along the mountainside, crossing curved bridges over the sea – this is one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive train experiences that not all tourists are aware of.

Why was Lăng Cô recognized as one of the most beautiful bays in the world?
The answer lies in the perfection of the whole. The World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club evaluatesThe price is based on many criteria: natural beauty, ecosystem integrity, geographical diversity, and potential for sustainable development. Lang Co meets all these criteria with excellent scores.
More importantly, despite being internationally recognized for over 15 years, Lang Co has retained its surprising wildness. Compared to Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, or Da Nang, which have been heavily commercialized, Lang Co still offers deserted beaches, mornings filled only with the sound of waves and fishermen pulling nets, and incredibly fresh seafood meals costing only a third of what you’d pay in major cities.
Guide to Traveling to Lang Co Bay
From Da Nang to Lang Co – The Most Beautiful Route in Central Vietnam
From Da Nang, you can reach Lang Co in two ways: crossing Hai Van Pass via National Highway 1A (about 45-60 minutes) or going through the Hai Van Tunnel (about 30-35 minutes). I always recommend taking the pass when going and the tunnel when returning (or vice versa), so you don’t miss the beautiful scenery of Hai Van Pass – one of the most beautiful coastal routes in Asia.
However, this is an important point that many people don’t know: Hai Van Pass is a difficult and dangerous route, especially during the rainy season (September-December), when fog is dense and the road is slippery. Many accidents have occurred with drivers unfamiliar with the road. That’s why I always advise tourists to use a professional shuttle service instead of driving themselves or taking a regular Grab/taxi.
Why Choose Faifo Express Over Taxi or Grab?
If you are in Da Nang and want to go to Lang Co, Faifo Express’s shuttle service is an option I don’t hesitate to recommend to anyone who asks me. This is not an advertisement – this is based on real experience.
Reason 1: Local drivers with in-depth knowledge of the terrain. Faifo Express drivers are locals; they know every curve of Hai Van Pass, know which sections are prone to landslides after rain, and know the best viewpoints for you to take photos. Regular Grab or taxis don’t have this advantage.
Reason 2: Fixed price, no worries about being overpriced. Grab in Da Nang usually charges by the kilometer, but when crossing the pass, the app often calculates incorrectly or drivers refuse to take the trip because they don’t want to climb the pass. Faifo Express provides a fixed package price from the start, with no hidden fees.
Reason 3: Flexible service. You can book a one-way or round-trip car, request the driver to wait while you sightsee, or combine it into a Da Nang – Lang Co – Hue tour in one day. Faifo Express also offers a very convenient Da Nang Airport pick-up and drop-off service if you’ve just landed and want to go straight to Lang Co.
[!TIP] If you plan to combine Lang Co with Hoi An on the same trip, Faifo Express offers a very convenient car service to Hoi An from Da Nang. You can book a route: Da Nang → Lang Co (morning) → Hoi An (afternoon/evening) in a single day without worrying about transportation.
From Hue to Lang Co
From Hue city, the distance to Lang Co is about 70km, taking approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by car. This is also a beautiful route, passing through Tam Giang Lagoon, coastal fishing villages before descending into Lang Co. Faifo Express also accepts bookings from Hue to Lang Co for private cars, suitable for families or groups of friends.
[!WARNING] Do not book motorbike taxis or street-side taxis at tourist spots in Lang Co – prices are often inflated 2-3 times the actual cost. Book your car service in advance through a reputable app or website.

Real Experiences at Lang Co Bay – What to Do, What to Play, What to Eat?
Swimming and Relaxing – But Choose Your Spot Wisely
Lang Co Beach stretches over 10km, but not every section is ideal for swimming. Here’s some “insider” information I want to share:
The public beach section is located right in the center of Lang Co town, near the market and seafood restaurants. This is the liveliest area, with many stalls renting out sun loungers and swim rings. The water here is quite clear, with moderate waves, suitable for families with young children.
The southern beach section (near the Laguna Lang Co resort area) has whiter sand and bluer water, but part of it has been designated for the resort. You can still access the public beach here, but it requires a bit of a walk.
The northern beach section (near the foot of Hai Van Pass) is the most pristine and least crowded. If you want a private beach all to yourself, head this way. However, be aware: this area has no restrooms or services, and the waves can be stronger.
[!NOTE] The best beach season in Lang Co is from March to August. From September to December, Central Vietnam enters its rainy and stormy season, the sea is often rough, and swimming is not recommended. If you visit during the rainy season, focus on culinary experiences and exploring fishing villages instead of swimming.
Explore Lang Co Lagoon – An Experience Few Undertake
This is what I regret most when I see tourists come to Lang Co, swim, and leave without visiting the lagoon. Lang Co Lagoon is a vast brackish ecosystem, home to hundreds of species of water birds, fish, shrimp, and crabs. In the early morning, when mist still covers the lagoon’s surface, the scenery here is as beautiful as a watercolor painting.
You can hire a boat from local fishermen to tour the lagoon (the price is around 150,000 – 240.000đ (≈$9) per boat, accommodating 4-6 people). The fishermen will take you through mangrove forests, past shrimp and fish farms, and tell you about the life of the fishing village. This is a true cultural experience, not a staged tour.
[!TIP] Book a boat trip for early morning (5:30 AM – 7:00 AM) to catch the fishermen going out to sea and witness the sunrise over the lagoon. This is the most beautiful moment of the day in Lang Co that not many tourists know about.
The Most Beautiful Check-in Spots in Lang Co
Hai Van Pass Summit: This offers the most stunning panoramic view of Lang Co Bay from an altitude of over 500 meters. In the early morning, before the mist dissipates, the entire bay lies beneath a thin veil of fog like a silk painting. Many professional photographers consider this one of the most beautiful photography spots in Vietnam.
Lang Co Railway Bridge: The old railway bridge on the North-South line crossing Lang Co Lagoon is one of the most beautiful architectural landscapes in Central Vietnam. Especially in the late afternoon, when the sunset casts its glow on the lagoon and the bridge’s reflection appears on the water – this is a moment for million-like photos.
The Beach at Sunrise: If you stay overnight in Lang Co (which I highly recommend), wake up early at 5:30 AM and head to the beach. Sunrises in Lang Co are particularly beautiful because there are no obstructions in the eastern sky, and the early morning light stretches across the clear blue sea.

What to Eat in Lang Co? Fresh Seafood at “Unbelievably Cheap” Prices
This is the part I’m most excited to write about Lang Co. If you’re a seafood lover, Lang Co is your paradise – and more importantly, a paradise at surprisingly affordable prices.
Lang Co Seafood Market opens from 4 AM toaround 8 AM, right at the fish market. This is where fishermen bring their freshly caught seafood to sell directly. You can buy lobster, crab, mantis shrimp, squid, mackerel, tuna… at prices 40-60% lower than in restaurants. Afterwards, take them to roadside eateries for preparation (preparation fee is around 30,000 – 60.000đ (≈$2)/dish).
Some must-try local specialties:
- Grilled lobster with chili salt: Lang Co lobsters are smaller than Nha Trang lobsters but have sweeter meat, costing around 300,000 – 600.000đ (≈$24)/kg depending on the season.
- Snakehead fish porridge: A breakfast specialty for Lang Co locals, served with crispy bread. The price is only 25,000 – 42.000đ (≈$2)/bowl.
- Charcoal-grilled live squid: Freshly caught squid, grilled over charcoal with scallion oil – this is a dish I could eat every day without getting tired of.
- Lang Co snakehead fish noodle soup: Unlike Hue’s noodle soup, Lang Co’s version has a sweeter broth and is less spicy, suitable even for those not accustomed to spicy food.
[!TIP] The best eateries in Lang Co are not the large restaurants with fancy signs – but the small roadside stalls near the market, where fishermen and locals often eat. Ask your guesthouse owner or locals for directions to the right places.
Visiting Bach Ma National Park – A Wonderful Plus Point
If you stay in Lang Co for 2 days, don’t miss Bach Ma National Park, about 20km from Lang Co. This is one of the best-preserved primeval forests in Vietnam, with over 2,000 plant species and hundreds of rare animal species. Within the forest are beautiful waterfalls like Do Quyen Waterfall (300m high, one of the highest in Vietnam) and Ngu Ho Waterfall with 5 tiered, crystal-clear pools.
Combining Lang Co with Bach Ma is one of the most perfect nature tourism routes in Central Vietnam.

Practical Tips – Things Only Locals Will Tell You
The Best Time to Visit Lang Co
March – May: This is the most beautiful season. The weather is cool, the sea is calm, and there are fewer tourists. Wildflowers bloom along the roads, and the air is fresh. If you ask me which month to choose, I would say April.
June – August: It’s the hot summer season (temperatures can reach 38-40°C), but the sea is at its most beautiful, with the clearest water. This is the peak tourist season, with increased prices for accommodation and services, so advance booking is necessary.
September – December: Rainy and stormy season. Not recommended, especially October and November which are the peak of the rainy season. Hai Van Pass is often covered in thick fog and prone to landslides.
January – February: Winter, the sea is too cold for swimming, but the scenery is still beautiful in a serene way. If you enjoy photographing desolate landscapes, this is the time to go.
